Statement by Michael Miller, Son of Dr. Hyatt and Director of USESS

My father, Dr. Alan R. Miller, who wrote under the pen name Christopher S. Hyatt, Ph.D., started Falcon Press in 1981 with a group of friends, among whom was his beloved teacher Dr. Israel Regardie. Over the years, he was able to attract some of the finest minds and most rebellious, original thinkers and occultists as allies to his work.  These included such luminaries as Robert Anton Wilson, Timothy Leary, and William S. Burroughs. He also reached out to other talented but then lesser known occultists, some of whom have gone on to make a name for themselves. These include writers such as Lon Milo DuQuette and James Wasserman

Dr. Hyatt was a Libertarian of the Ayn Rand school, a devoted practitioner of the magical teachings of Aleister Crowley, and a student of the philosopher Friedrich Nietzche with whom he felt an especial kinship. Some time before his death, he was formally elevated to the IX° by O.T.O. in recognition of his spiritual stature and integrity of character. He had also earned two Ph.D.s, in both Statistics and Psychology, and published a number of papers in peer-reviewed scholarly journals. A highly successful businessman,  he at one time owned his own private jet, was an avid yachtsman, a hunter, firearms enthusiast, and motorcyclist. He was also an observant Orthodox Jew whose religious practices were at various periods intensely rigorous. He traveled to Israel, and advanced the work of the Chabad through charitable contributions, serving in an advisory capacity to his local Temple, and was a friend to various Rabbis and leaders of that movement.

My father was also a difficult man, a loner, prone to anger, depression, and alcohol abuse. He alienated many people with his mood swings and erratic behavior. Yet I think it is fair to say that most people who knew him admired his intelligence, enjoyed his sense of humor, were humbled by his generosity, and found him a charming and sociable gentleman.

He humorously referred to himself as “Dukkham-Meister,” that is someone who  understood the First Noble Truth of Buddhism that All is Sorrow. At the same time, it was his way of poking fun at himself for his penchant for getting into trouble and occasionally wreaking havoc in the lives of others. When he titled his important collection, Rebels and Devils, he was neither kidding nor exaggerating. My father was a Rebel and a creator of Chaos.

I became close to him after I entered college. (My parents divorced when I was a baby.) He proved an invaluable guide after I graduated and went on to build a successful career as one of the youngest and most successful basketball coaches in the history of the sport in California. He also advised me as I entered the world of business and real estate. We worked together on a number of books over the years. I invested in Jim Wasserman’s book Aleister Crowley and the Practice of the Magical Diary, contributed an essay to Undoing Yourself Too, the precursor to Rebels and Devils, produced special hardcover editions of a number of Falcon books, and regularly performed other editorial and production tasks over the years.

Prior to his being diagnosed with cancer, my father took me into his bank and made me a co-signatory on the United States Ecclesiastical Society  and Seminary account. USESS is a California non-profit religious organization devoted to the encouragement of spiritual development in America. It is also the parent company that owns New Falcon Publications. I am the only person besides my father who was entrusted with such a responsibility. He also encouraged my relationship with his longtime friend and attorney, Paul Basile, Esq., who had done the legal work to establish the foundation. He made sure that Paul understood his intentions for the succession of the foundation. Before his death, my father legally passed the USESS and New Falcon Publications into my care. (Considering the fact that among the Jewish people such an act between father and son is the most natural thing in the world, it  is often puzzling to observe the slanders and accusations that have recently soiled the public discourse concerning disposition of New Falcon Publications.)

Lee Rosenstein, who calls himself “Nick Tharcher,” worked for and with my father for many years. Theirs was a tempestuous love/hate relationship, in which some rather complicated and unhealthy psychological dynamics were played out. Lee (Nick) became intensely angry and resentful when he learned I had been made the heir to USESS and New Falcon. Although I offered to allow him to remain on as manager, and offered him a raise, he quit the company and resigned his membership in USESS. He then refused to turn over my corporate records including author contracts, royalty statements, customer lists, distributor contacts, sales and inventory data. He also seized tangible company property such computers, cds, dvds, and books.

I have spent much of the past year since my father’s death rebuilding the company and undoing the damage Lee has been creating by working to turn public opinion against me. These efforts have resulted in the launch of our new website as the first step in an ambitious and consistent outreach to our loyal distributors and customers.

On the other hand, I am deeply saddened that “Nick” was able to take advantage of my step-mother Linda Miller’s grief, and manipulate her to join him and work against me and my father’s wishes. He charged me with protecting her after he was gone, a promise I made to him with absolute sincerity and filial propriety. The fact that she has, for now, joined Lee in his campaign against me and New Falcon is contrary to her own best interests. I look forward to the day when she is free of his negativity and able to recognize the sincerity and beneficence of my intentions. As my father’s widow, and my friend, she is someone about whom I care deeply.

In the meantime, let me pledge to you, loyal members of the Falcon family, that we are committed to maintaining the highest standards from here on out. Over the past decade, as Lee had increasingly persuaded my father of the profit potential of “third-way deals” or author-financed books, Falcon’s reputation for hard-hitting occult titles and our no-compromise political stance were occasionally muted. We are now undergoing a thorough and careful review of our entire line, and intend to return to those leaner and meaner days of high-quality-only books that longtime Falcon readers always appreciated.

We are now in stock on all Bob Wilson’s titles and will keep them in print. We just released a third revised edition of Rebels and Devils, with a dynamic new cover, available both in print and as a cd. I am especially happy to announce a new, completely redesigned hardcover edition of one of my father’s favorite books, Israel Regardie’s Healing Energy, Prayer & Relaxation with an Introduction by Colin Wilson, contributions by Christopher Hyatt, James Wasserman, and Lon DuQuette, in addition to a very rare and brilliant essay on the Pentagram Ritual by the anonymous adept who wrote under her magical motto AIMA. We’ll soon be putting out Lon Milo DuQuette and my father’s Sex Magic, Tantra, and Tarot in an improved new edition with a new Preface by Lon, new text art of his Tarot cards, and an elegant cover design that will be consistent with the other titles in their four-books series. We’re hoping to one day package these four books as a boxed set. We are considering a new redesigned edition of Tim Leary’s classic Info-Psychology.

The Complete Golden Dawn System of Magic by Israel Regardie, Christopher Hyatt, and Lon DuQuette is also now available with an improved binding, and extensive index and table of contents compiled by James Strain. We have a limited number of leatherbound copies for sale, signed by Lon.

The next couple of years will find us cutting the fat from our list, letting go of those authors who have decided to cast their lot with “Nick Tharcher,” repairing relationships with other authors whose royalty records have been stolen, and seeking out new gifted and creative writers who are in harmony with our goals. When not defending our legal rights, we will be engaged in honing New Falcon Publications to become both the embodiment of my father’s highest aspirations, and an antidote to the collectivism, materialism, and endemic psychological dependency that pervades so much of our contemporary cultural discourse.

We ask that you join with us to help make these good things happen.

Thank you,

Michael Miller

Director of USESS
